Cougs Fall To UNC in Double OT 2-1

Wow . . . in front of over 4,200 fans, playing against a North Carolina dynasty, on our home field, a #1 seed vs a #2 seed, people outside the stadium with signs asking for tickets . . . what an memorable game!  The Cougs knew it would be a battle, and the Tar Heels brought it.  They came out with some fire, and put a goal away in the first 3 minutes of the game.  That didn't stop the Cougs, and they bounced back with a little fire of their own.  Carlee Payne Holmoe was fouled in the box, and the Cougs were awarded a penalty kick.  Rachel Manning buried it into the back of the net to tie up the game.  Both teams created some good chances to put the game away, and neither team could put it away.  The game went into overtime, and the Cougs came out ready to battle. They had two awesome chances in the fist couple minutes. Lindsi Cutshall received a pass from Carlee Holmoe, and beat the keeper for the win, but North Carolina made and amazing save to clear the ball off the line.  A few minutes later Rachel Manning had a header off a corner from Jessica Ringwood that was saved off the line by a UNC player.  The Tar Heels capitalized with 4 minutes left in the second overtime to finish the game.  The Cougars left it all on the field . . . and if you were there watching teh game, or watched it on TV, you would know how hard the girls battled, and how much heart and passion they have.

The Cougs have had an amazing season, starting back in August, beating ranked teams, from Penn State, Pepperdine and Portland and only having one loss!  The Cougs won the West Coast Conference Championship and went undefeated in conference play.  They earned a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and had the opportunity to host the first 4 rounds of the tournament in front of the best fans in the nation.  The knocked off Utah State 2-1, Auburn 1-0, Marquette in a shoot out and then fell to UNC 2-1.  What a memorable year . . . this was a special group of girls, and we are sure going to miss our seniors.  Seniors, thank you for your hard work and dedication to the program. You have left a legacy and set the mark high for the girls that follow in your footsteps.

REMEMBERING OUR DEAR FRIEND JENAVIEVE PHILLIPS

Hi Friends,

It is with great sadness and tears, that I share with you the news of the passing of Jenavieve Phillips. Vieve was killed in an auto accident on November 16, 2012 in Gilbert, Arizona.  Many of you may have already heard, but I wanted to reach out to all of you to keep her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Vieve had a very special place in my heart as I know she did for many of you. I know that her time at BYU and her experience with all her teammates was life changing, and she has expressed to me many times over the years of her appreciation and love for all of you and BYU Soccer. Vieve was an inspiration to me in so many ways and taught me so much about dedication, perseverance, and compassion. I will miss her dearly, but I know that she is smiling down on everyone in the loving presence of her Heavenly Father and Savior.

We will honor Vieve in the near future and celebrate her contributions to our lives and the BYU soccer program. I would like to put something together for her family from those of us who where blessed to know her. We will let you know of the plans soon.

My thoughts are with you all.

COUGS ARE GOING TO THE ELITE EIGHT!

Double Rainbow before the game

Wow . . . what a game last night! The Cougs beat Marquette in PK's in front of over 3,100 fans at South Field!  The Cougs came out strong in the first half outshooting the Golden Eagles 12-5 with some good looks at the goal, but Marquette did not back down. They came out fighting in the second half and had some good chances.  The Cougs defense and Erica Owens were solid in the back blocking shots and making amazing saves!  Lindsi Lisonbee Cutshall played an amazing game, and was both in the offensive half and then making game-saving blocks in the back on defense.  Erica Owens made awesome saves as the crowd chanted her name, and the rest of the team fought until the last minute of the double OT.

COUGS TAKE DOWN THE AGGIES!!

South Field - Pre-game Saturday, Game time 2PM

The Cougs had a tough match up against in-state rivals, Utah State! The game was set for Friday night, at 6 PM!  The snow started early in the afternoon Friday, and didn't stop all day long! The grounds crew worked hard to keep the field free from snow, but as soon as they could plow it, it was already covered again! The game was rescheduled to be played Saturday at 2 PM!  It had snowed a significant amount Friday night, which made for an adventure getting South Field ready for the match by 2 PM! Grounds crew started early Saturday morning with the snow removal and by 9 AM Jen Rockwood, Coach Watkins, and Tom Holmoe were out on the field with many others shoveling off the deep snow.  The plows were going, and people kept showing up with shovels to clean off the field and the bleachers.  They had machines carrying out the snow to dump trucks outside of the fence . . . it really was an amazing sight! At one point there were little kids, and the BYU Men's Team showed up to join in the fun!  By game time, the field looked AMAZING!  The grounds crew did and awesome job, as well as everyone who came out to help that day! THANK YOU!!

As for the game, the Cougs showed up to play in front of 2,200 fans! The air was crisp, the snow was mounted up around the field, but that didn't stop the Cougs from getting the job done! Jessica Ringwood put a goal in off an assist from Jaiden Thornock in the 30th minute of the first half! Marissa Nimmer would answer again for the Cougs ten minutes later off a cross from Kayla Varner.  The Cougs went into halftime up 2-0.  The Aggies came out fired up and put a goal away in the first minute of the half.  The Aggies would continue to come at the Cougs, and had another good chance later in the half but was tipped over by Erica Owens.  The Cougs will now advance in the tournament and face Auburn on Thursday, November 15th at 6 PM! Make sure you get your tickets they sale out fast!

Keep up the good work Cougs, and go get Auburn!
