Cougs Beat USF, and Jen Wins Her 300th Game!

Jen's 300th Win

What an awesome night. . . the Cougs are in California where they will battle both USF and Santa Clara.  The girls have been working hard, and had their first WCC Conference game last night against USF. The Cougs came out hard, and Niki Fernandes put a goal away in the first 5 minutes of the game, assisted by Cloee Colohan and Ashley Hatch.  Cloee scored a sick goal outside of the box in the 40th minute to put the Cougs up 2-0, she was assisted by Kyleigh Royal.

This win marked Jennifer Rockwood's 300th win!! Here is some information about Jen's legacy:

Only four D-I coaches have won 300 games or more at only one university (Anson Dorrance, UNC; Len Tsantiris, UConn; John Daly, William & Mary; Phil Pincince, Brown). All of them have been with their programs since they started NCAA competition. Coach Rockwood will be the fifth.

Coach Rockwood is the fifth winningest coach at a single university, and is fourth in winning percentage having coached at one university. She is 7th in winning percentage and 16th in career victories all-time in D-I and is 30th and 33rd over all divisions.

In divisions I, II and III dating back to 1977, 31 coaches have reached 300 wins, coach Rockwood will be the 32nd in all divisions and 16th in D-I. Only 10 have made it to 400 (4 have made it in D-I, Santa Clara's coach is the 10th, it happened in their last game).

South Field was filled with over 4,500 fans, and it was a beautiful night for a game! The Cougs came out strong and had a few good looks at the goal. The Cougs couldn't find the net, and Irvine was able to sneak one by in the last 30 seconds of regulation.  The Cougs are now 4-1-1, and will return home on Thursday, September 19th at 7 PM where they will host Oklahoma.  Be sure to be there early to cheer on the Cougs!

BYU Takes Down Cal State Fullerton 3-1

BYU took on Cal State Fullerton this weekend for their home opener! The Cougs almost put one away in the first minute of the game off a header from Colette Jepson-Smith, but Cal State came up with a big save from the keeper, Lindsey Maricic!  The Cougs put the first goal of the game away in the 26th minute. Paige Hunt sent a free kick into the box and Rachel Manning was there to head it in.  Ashley Hatch put the second goal away in the 48th minute on a breakaway, assisted by Cloee Colohan, her second goal of the season.  Cal State put a goal away in the 74th minute, and the Cougs answered right back in the 78th minute off a penalty kick by Rachel Manning.

The Cougs play Nebraska, Saturday, August 31st at 7PM!

The BYU Women's Soccer Team also had an awesome opportunity to be a part of Amber's Make A Wish experience.  Amber came to the Cougar Kickoff last week to meet the BYU Soccer Team and to hang out.  They played soccer, put Erica Owens in the dunk tank, good work Amber :) and played some soccer.

It was an amazing experience and the girls really enjoyed getting to know Amber and her family.  They announced her wish, a Caribbean Cruise, at the Cougar Kick-Off!  Thanks for letting us be a part of your wish!

BYU Hosts HaitI National Team

The BYU Cougars had the opportunity to host and play the Haiti National Team on Friday night.  What an amazing opportunity to be able to meet the girls from the Haiti National Team and learn more about them and their culture.  We were able to have dinner with the team before our game Friday night, and they are such an awesome group of girls, they had us laughing all night long.  I am pretty sure they had some better dance moves than we did . . .

BYU defeated Haiti in their international friendly 5-0 Friday night.  The Cougs first goal came from Cloee Colohan, assisted by Colette Jepson-Smith. The Cougs second goal was a beautiful header by Rachel Manning, assisted by Colette and Jaiden Thornock.  Ashely Hatch, our incoming freshmen, had her first college goal in the 39th minute and Marissa Nimmer knocked in her first goal of the season. Cloee finished the game with two goals, after she scored a free kick that bounced of both posts and the crossbar.

Both Haiti and the Cougs played a great game, and the girls are looking forward to their first regular game of the season. The Cougs host Cal State Fullerton, Friday, August 23 @ 7 PM.

Thank you Haiti for coming to South Field, we enjoyed having you, and look forward to watching you continue your journey to the World Cup!
